Tom Brady led his Tampa Bay Buccaneers team to a Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, making it his seventh personal victory. Even as the nation erupted in celebration, many thought Brady’s victory was ‘wrong’, especially during Black History Month. While many took to Twitter to share their opinion on Brady’s win, many others were furious that it was Patrick Mahomes who lost to Brady.
As soon as the results of the game were announced, Brady was labeled a ‘racist’. ‘Tom Brady’s win during Black History Month is so racist,’ one user tweeted. ‘If Tom Brady beats Patrick Mahomes during Black History Month then we have to double everything we’re demanding of reparations’ added another user. Brady is no stranger to criticism. Last week, he was called out in the USA Today article for his apparent support for former President Donald Trump. But the tweets led to a wider debate on social media. Twitter has started asking if this really is a race issue. It also raises other more relevant questions. Can’t the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl because they have a white quarterback? Or did Brady have to downplay himself to let Mahomes win because of his run?
