A campanha do Sri Lanka na Copa do Mundo terminou abruptamente, com a eliminação na fase de grupos depois de vencer apenas uma das quatro partidas.

The recent exit of the Sri Lankan cricket team from the T20 World Cup has sparked controversy, with accusations of a late-night escapade to a nightclub leading to the team’s poor performance.

Harin Fernando stakes his position

Harin Fernando, the current Sri Lankan Sports Minister, has strongly refuted claims made by his predecessor, Roshan Ranasinghe, who alleged that the team’s early exit stemmed from a visit to a nightclub. Fernando took a firm stance, stating, “I challenged them (critics) to prove it, and I will resign if they can prove it.”

The minister also discouraged the public’s resort to social media criticism of the team, emphasizing, “As a country, we need to help the children [referring to the players].”

The accusations revolve around an incident during one of Sri Lanka‘s practice sessions preceding the tournament. Reports suggest the team arrived late after a potential night out before the match.

Harin Fernando in SLC

Harin Fernando assumed the position of Sports Minister in November 2023. This followed the removal of Ranasinghe by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The controversy surrounding the previous administration included the sacking of Sri Lanka Cricket’s management and the appointment of an interim committee.

Early T20 World Cup exit disappoint fans

Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign ended abruptly, with them exiting at the group stage after winning only one of their four matches. The team, led by Wanindu Hasaranga, faced defeats against Bangladesh and South Africa in their initial matches. Although they secured a win against Netherlands, it wasn’t enough to advance them to the Super 8 stage.

The unproven allegations regarding a potential nightclub visit remain a source of speculation. However, Minister Fernando’s firm stance in denial and his call for a more constructive approach towards the team highlight a developing situation in Sri Lankan cricket.
