Com Srihari Nataraj e Dhinidhi Desinghu representando a Índia em Paris, o contingente indiano de natação terá como objetivo causar impacto nos Jogos Olímpicos.

The Indian swimming team will have a presence at the Paris 2024 Olympics after all, with Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu securing spots via the Universality Quota.

Universality Quota offers lifeline

The Swimming Federation of India (SFI) announced on Wednesday that both swimmers had been selected.

This comes after no Indian swimmer achieved the automatic qualification times required for the Olympics.

The Universality Quota offers an opportunity for countries with limited representation in swimming to send athletes to the Games.

Srihari Nataraj returns, Dhinidhi Desinghu debut

For Srihari Nataraj, this marks a return to the Olympic stage. He competed in the men’s 100m backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics after achieving the A-standard qualification time. This time around, he will once again be competing in the 100m backstroke.

Dhinidhi Desinghu, on the other hand, will be making her Olympic debut in Paris. The 14-year-old sensation currently leads the women’s table with 749 World Aquatics points. She will be participating in the women’s 200m freestyle event.

Sajan Prakash falls short

Seasoned Indian swimmer Sajan Prakash, a two-time Olympian, unfortunately missed out on qualifying for Paris. He took to Instagram to express his disappointment but vowed to continue his dedication to the sport and inspire future generations of swimmers.

“My attempt to qualify for my third Olympics has come to an end. For over 25 years, I have dedicated myself entirely to this sport, which holds a special place in my heart. Competing in the last two Olympic Games and maintaining consistent performance in such a demanding arena has been profoundly challenging, both physically and mentally. The obstacles off the field often proved to be even tougher,” said Sajan.

“To be honest, I have encountered new lows that fascinate me as they deepen my understanding of the sport and empower me to overcome future challenges. I am committed to giving back to the sport and inspiring the next generation. I am immensely grateful to my team, friends, and loved ones. Their unwavering support has been invaluable. I will take this time to reset and come back stronger,” he concluded.

Looking Ahead to Paris 2024

With Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu representing India in Paris, the Indian swimming contingent will be aiming to make a splash at the Olympic Games.
