Cricket Australia (CA) has banned ex-Sri Lanka cricketer Dulip Samaraweera for 20 years for allegedly breaching the code of conduct. He was appointed as coach to the Victoria women’s team in May but decided to resign in the same month before taking charge. As per a statement issued by CA, Samaraweera was found engaging in ‘inappropriate behaviour’ while he was employed by Cricket Victoria (CV).

As per the statement, Dulip was found engaged in inappropriate behaviour by CA’s conduct committee. Cricket Victoria backed CA’s decision to ban the Sri Lankan, adding that his conduct was utterly reprehensible. He is also banned from holding any position in Big Bash League (BBL) or the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) as well.
“CA and CV are committed to providing a safe environment for all players and employees and the welfare of those subjected to mistreatment is paramount,” a CA statement read.

In a separate statement, Cricket Victoria lauded the complainant for speaking up and said that they will never tolerate any behaviour which compromises the position held by an individual in the team.
Samaraweera was previously the acting head coach of the Victorian women’s team. He played seven Tests for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1995 and appeared in five ODIs during his playing career.
