Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress Review 2024: The Best Value From Tempur-Pedic

The Tempur-Pedic mattress brand has been around since 1992 and is synonymous with memory foam. Memory foam was actually initially developed by NASA for the cushions of aircraft, and Tempur-Pedic was one of the first brands to take that slow-to-respond, body-conforming material and put it in a mattress. 

I have personally tested nine different Tempur-Pedic mattresses, including the affordable Tempur Cloud, the Tempur Pro Adapt, two versions of the Tempur Adapt, and two different versions of the Pro Breeze and Luxe Breeze and one thing all of the beds have in common is the feel of dense memory foam that many sleepers love. My current home mattress is actually the Tempur Pro Breeze. 

The Adapt mattress is the base model of the “Adapt Collection,” and while it may not have quite as many features as the Pro or Luxe Adapt mattresses, its lower price point will make it one of the most compelling options in the Tempur-Pedic lineup. 

First impressions of the Tempur Adapt mattress

The Tempur Adapt mattress was the first mattress from Tempur-Pedic that ever came through our mattress testing warehouse in Reno and I was really excited to check it out. Tempur-Pedic for most of its existence has been focused on selling beds in brick-and-mortar stores instead of through an online storefront like Casper, Leesa or Helix. 

Immediately there was a pretty big difference between the Tempur Adapt and many of the beds we had tested previously is that instead of shipping the mattress rolled back inside of a box, it ships full size via “white glove delivery.” A delivery team brought in the mattress for us, which is always nice because it saves us some heavy lifting and we could start forming opinions on it right away because there was no off-gassing wait time. 

My initial thoughts of the Adapt mattress were, “Wow, that is memory foamy,” and by “memory foamy” I mean that the mattress is slow to respond. It also felt very dense right off the bat, which many sleepers are looking for in their next mattress.

Is the Tempur Adapt mattress right for you?

There are a lot of mattresses we have tested that feel like memory foam, including Nectar, Amerisleep, Layla, Cocoon and certain beds from both Casper and Leesa. For anyone looking for a true classic memory foam mattress, I think the Tempur Adapt should be a serious consideration. It ranges from being roughly the same price as some of its competitors, like the Casper Snow, to being much more expensive than something like Nectar so it should be within the budgets of a lot of shoppers. 

The Tempur Adapt also does a solid job of regulating your sleeping temperature and preventing you from warming up at night. Historically, older memory foam beds had a tendency to sleep warm because the material wasn’t very breathable, and because of the sink-in quality of memory foam, there’s generally more heat reflected back on you throughout the night. With a modern memory foam bed like the Adapt, the foams are much more breathable, and the cover is noticeably cool to the touch. I wouldn’t put it in the active cooling category like the much more expensive Breeze mattresses but the Adapt should sleep temperature neutral. 

The bottom line is if you like memory foam, odds are you will like Tempur-Pedic and the Adapt mattress is the best value from the brand in my opinion.

Tempur Adapt firmness and feel

Tempur Adapt feel

The feel of the Adapt mattress is a classic, dense memory foam. When you first lay down on it, the bed will feel pretty firm at first (especially if your room is cold), and then you’ll slowly start to sink into the top layers of foam as it conforms to your body’s shape. It has a body-conforming quality that can relieve pressure on joints like your hips, shoulders and even your lower back.

The hallmark of a classic memory foam feel like this is its lack of responsiveness. When you press down on it and remove your hand, the foam takes a significant amount of time to snap back into its original shape. This can deter some sleepers from tossing and turning at night, which can lead to more restful sleep, but conversely, some sleepers sometimes report feeling “stuck” in a memory foam bed like the Adapt. It really comes down to personal preference with a distinct feel like this.

I was never a fan of this type of feel, but after sleeping on the Tempur Pro Breeze for a little over six months, it has grown on me a lot. I find that most nights I fall asleep in one position and wake up in the same position and my sleep tracker has a “restless moments” statistic and my score is almost always rated as “excellent” on the Pro Breeze, which has the same feel as the Adapt. 

Tempur Adapt firmness

The Adapt mattress is available in two firmness options to choose from during checkout — but there’s really only one real firmness profile because there’s a “medium” model and a “medium hybrid” model and we have found that there’s no significant difference between the two in terms of the firmness profile and the feel. 

Both versions are around a flat medium on our firmness scale, which means they should work fairly well for all sleeping positions: back, stomach, side and combination. 

A medium firmness profile like this is popular with couples who maybe don’t fully agree on a specific soft or firm profile. 

If you want a bed from Tempur-Pedic that is on the softer or firmer end of the spectrum, you will need to upgrade to the Tempur ProAdapt mattress, which features more firmness options.

Tempur Adapt construction

The construction of the Tempur Adapt mattress is pretty simple, which means there aren’t a lot of layers underneath the cover. Certain beds we’ve tested feature many distinct layers but the Tempur Adapt only has a few. 

The support layer will depend on which model you choose. If you go with the hybrid, the support layer will be pocketed coils, and the base model will be dense foam. The hybrid will be slightly more expensive than the foam model (more on that later), and the real reason you’d want the hybrid model is if you’re heavier and want to make sure your mattress is more durable over the long haul. We generally recommend that people who are 230 lbs and above consider a coil mattress because of its improved durability.

Above the support layer are two distinct layers of “Tempur Material” which is Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam. Most brands use foam that is unique to it; I was recently able to do a tour of the 3Z Brands mattress factory and learn about the foam pouring process and each variety of foam is slightly different. 

Tempur Adapt performance

Edge support

During testing, we didn’t notice any red flags in the edge support department. Even though the memory foam comfort layers compress and conform to your body’s shape, we didn’t observe any roll sensation on the Adapt mattress. The coils on the hybrid model are actually bordered by foam, which is meant to improve the edge support. I would say the hybrid models of Tempur-Pedic mattresses I have tested have slightly better edge support, but the difference is negligible. 

Motion isolation

Motion isolation is one of the factors that Tempur-Pedic, as a brand, is known for. You remember these old commercials from Tempur-Pedic showing off this feature, and they recently started featuring ads with a similar purpose called the “jiggle test” and I have to say these beds live up to the hype. 

The primary reason I made the switch to a Tempur-Pedic at home was because my partner is a light sleeper and struggled with waking up in the middle of the night on our previous mattress and the Tempur Pro Breeze has solved that issue and the Adapt should too.

Temperature regulation

In the past, original iterations of memory foam beds slept quite warm if not downright hot. Early formulations of memory foam had poor airflow and because memory foam conforms to your body there was a lot of body heat reflected back onto people while they slept. 

Modern memory foam beds like the Tempur Adapt are significantly more breathable and this bed is actually supplemented by a cover with phase-change material that is cool to the touch. This cooling factor isn’t as strong as on other Tempur-Pedic mattresses like the Pro Adapt and the Breeze mattresses but it will do a nice job at helping you sleep temperature neutral. 

For maximum cooling factor, you’ll want to check out the Luxe Breeze mattress, but that bed is also very expensive, almost triple the price of the Adapt. I think the Adapt will work well for most but other options provide more cooling.

The Tempur Adapt is the second most affordable mattress in the Tempur-Pedic lineup with only the Tempur Cloud priced lower, and not by much. I think the price point of the Tempur Adapt will make it a compelling option because the other beds in the Adapt line are significantly more expensive and the Breeze line gets even more pricey. 

The hybrid model of the Adapt will be an additional $300 regardless of the size you choose, but even then, it’s still much more affordable than other Tempur-Pedic beds.

Tempur-Pedic mattress policies

Free shipping

You won’t be paying any extra upfront cost for shipping the Adapt mattress, but its delivery method is quite a bit different than most beds. It might still arrive in a box, but it won’t be rolled packed in plastic, and a local delivery team will do all the heavy lifting to set up the bed and will even take away your old mattress if you want them to. 

One of the main differences between the Tempur Adapt and the Tempur Cloud is the shipping method because the Cloud ships roll packed in a bag. 

90-night trial 

All TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses come with a slightly shorter than standard 90-night trial period to determine if you actually like the mattress and want to keep it long-term. 

Keep in mind that it can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to your sleeping preferences. It took about a month and a half for me to get used to sleeping on the Pro Breeze, and I knew in the first two months that I wouldn’t be replacing it, so I think 90 nights is enough, but other brands do offer longer trials. 

Return policy

At any point after the first 30 nights post-delivery you decide the mattress isn’t for you for any reason, you can return it and get a refund minus a return fee of at least $175, which is steeper than what we usually see with brands that don’t have free returns.

Warranty

All Tempur-Pedic mattresses, including the Adapt, are backed by a standard 10-year warranty. If you buy a mattress online, a 10-year warranty is the minimum you should expect.

How does the Tempur Adapt compare to similar mattresses?

Tempur Adapt vs. Casper Snow

The Casper Snow is a new type of mattress from Casper. Previously the brand would use memory foam in its mattresses but none of them had a classic, dense memory foam feel until Casper revamped its lineup in early 2024. Both the Casper Snow and the Casper Snow Max have a very similar feel to Tempur-Pedic and both Snows do a nice job at helping you sleep cool thanks to active cooling materials. 

The base model Casper Snow is priced similarly to the Tempur Adapt, it has a similar firmness profile and it is a hybrid by default. I don’t have insider knowledge, but to me, it seems like Casper was directly trying to compete with Tempur-Pedic with the Casper Snow and I think it is an excellent Tempur Adapt alternative.

Tempur Adapt vs. Nectar Premier Copper

The Nectar Premier Copper is the most high-end mattress available from the popular brand. It has a similar firmness profile to the Tempur Adapt, it has a hybrid option, it has active cooling elements and it has a similar type of memory foam feel. 

The Premier Copper has a more responsive memory foam in comparison to the Tempur Adapt, but it should satisfy sleepers seeking a memory foam feel in their mattress. The Premier Copper is also very affordable, especially once discounts are factored in.

Final thoughts on the Tempur-Pedic Adapt mattress

For people interested in the Tempur-Pedic brand, I think the Tempur Pro Adapt is probably the first mattress you should look at because it has multiple firmness options, a strong cooling factor and a removable and washable cover. For a more budget-conscious shopper who wants a medium firmness profile, the Tempur Adapt makes more sense. 

The Adapt is also a better choice than the Tempur Cloud in my opinion because the Adapt comes with white glove delivery and has a cooling cover for only $200 more which is a worthy upgrade.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are on average more expensive than other mattress brands we test and part of that has to do with the brand name. Tempur-Pedic is one of the most recognizable brand names out there and its beds are undoubtedly very high quality, and the Adapt mattress is an excellent value for anyone looking for a classic memory foam mattress.

Other mattresses from Tempur-Pedic

Tempur Cloud: This mattress is the most affordable bed in the Tempur-Pedic lineup. It features the same dense memory foam feel as the Adapt and comes in the same medium and medium hybrid models. The biggest difference between the Cloud and the rest of the Tempur-Pedic mattress is that it is shipped roll-packed in plastic and inside of a large bag as opposed to white glove delivery. It is basically Tempur-Pedic’s answer to other bed-in-a-box brands. The Tempur Cloud also doesn’t feature any noticeable cooling factor and actually sleeps somewhat warm, in my opinion.

Tempur Pro Adapt: This mattress is probably the most “versatile” mattress in the Tempur-Pedic lineup because it offers the most firmness options of all the beds from Tempur-Pedic. It has a cooling cover that is a bit stronger than the Adapt, and the cover is removable and washable. The Pro Adapt is more expensive than the Adapt, but it also has those extra features.
